First of all I want to THANK YOU for your support this year of our Colegio Maya Athletics Program! It's been fun to share with you and your children both victories and losses (learning opportunities) throughout the year. It has been a year of a lot of growth and learning, and I look forward to a great year next year!

Important Announcements! 

Monday, May 22nd
THERE WILL BE NO VOLLEYBALL PRACTICE! This is due to the rehearsals for the ART FESTIVAL as well as the MS and HS HOME Basketball Games! Students are encouraged to stay and attend both events! Just be sure to do the SchoolAid App for your child indicating the change in transport. 

Tuesday, May 23rd
THERE WILL BE NO AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES DUE TO THE ARTS FESTIVAL! We hope to see you all on Wednesday the 24th to celebrate the end of our sports seasons with our Sports Festival - more details below!

MS Volleyball had three games this week! They won 2 and lost 1. They have only lost one game all season! Way to go MS VB Warriors! 

Our HS VB Team finished up their season with a 2-0 win over Bilingüe Vista Hermosa! Way to go Warriors!

Basketball Announcement: Monday, May 22nd Home Game vs. Equity American School: HS at 2:45pm & MS at 3:30pm. Come on out and support our MS and HS Warriors! Be sure to fill out the SchoolAid App so your child can stay and show their support for our Maya Warriors and Honor our Seniors for their last Basketball Game of the year!! We hope you will join us!  

MS VB Game vs. Montessori at 4pm! This will be their FINAL game of the season. They only have ONE loss all season! Go Warriors! Bus will leave Colegio Maya at 3pm! 

Tuesday, May 23rd!! 
Art and Design Festival - No practices! All Practices are canceled this day students are encouraged to stay and attend and/or participate in the art festival. 

Wednesday, May 24th! 
End of Year Sports celebration! All student athletes who have participated this year in Cheerleading, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, and Track and Field are invited to attend and celebrate their accomplishments this year! 

Parents, Administrators and Teachers are invited to sign-up on this form to play against our Student Warriors in the following sports: Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, and/or Track and Field Relays! We hope you will join us!

Thursday, May 25th! 
Our MS 2010-2011 Soccer Team will compete in the final next week, on Thursday, May 25th at 3pm! Students will be released at 2pm!

MS 2008 - 2009 Soccer HOME game! Thursday, May 25th at 3pm! Come show your support for our MS Warriors! To honor our 2008-2009 MS Soccer Team who are champions of the Liga Adeca we will host a friendly home game against Colegio Vida Central on our home turf at 3pm!

Congratulations to our MS Soccer team 2008-2009 who were undefeated this season! They are the champions of the Liga Carretera (ADECA) and will pass to the next round competing against the champions of the other leagues from the city! Way to go Warriors! 

We have two more weeks of sports games and competitions! We will end with our Sports Festival Celebrations for all Student Athletes and coaches on Wednesday, May 24th from 2:30-4:30pm. Teachers, admin and parents are invited to come and play against our Students on this day! Sign-up on the attached form or see Ms. Day for more information! We hope you can join us for this day of Celebration!

We also have our Academic & Athletics Awards on Tuesday, May 30th from 8-10 am in the PAFA theater! Please RSVP your attendance here!

Congratulations to all of our teams this week who won all their games in some very tight and exciting matches! Here are the results:

Way to go Warriors!

Congratulations also to Carmen C. and Chrissy F. who participated in the World Championship of Cheer in Orlando Florida two weeks ago! They did amazing, getting 8th place in one category and 5th in Nationals representing Guatemala through Cheer! Way to go Chrissy and Carmen!! 

Also, we had a great first time ever Cheer Festival Event at Colegio Maya on Saturday, April 29th! We hosted 8 different schools and over 100+ Cheerleaders and dance teams.

April

There are many away games next week, some of which will be early release days for the students. Please note the following schedule and the lists of students will be sent out Monday morning. 

Basketball

This week our 2008/09 and 2010-2011 Basketball Teams have away games on Monday, April 24th. This will be an Early Release at 2pm. Bus will leave at 2:10pm and the names will be sent Monday AM. 

Wednesday, April 26th our 2008/09 and our 2005-2007 Basketball Teams will travel to take on Village. The MS plays at 3pm and the HS at 4pm! Early Release 2pm, bus leaves at 2:10pm.

Thursday, April 27th our 2010-2011 Basketball Team will play against Julio Verne at 3pm. This is an early release at 2pm and the bus will leave at 2:10pm. 

Volleyball

Wednesday, April 26th - 2008-09 VB team will travel to play Village at 2:45pm. Bus will leave at 2pm. Early release will be at 1:50pm. 

Home Game! We have our first HS Girls VB Home Game of the ADECA League on Wednesday, April 26th at 3:45pm!! Come on out and support our Warriors! 

Soccer

2010 Team vs. Julio Verne - no early release - games at 4pm. Bus leaves at 3pm. 

 

Maya Memo! 

  • Welcome Back Girls and Boys Volleyball! They traveled to San Pedro Sula, Honduras last week to represent Maya in the international AASCA tournament! Thank you to the coaches, parents and teachers who supported them in their travels! Way to go Warriors! (Results not in yet to include here - will update on Saturday) 
  • HS Girls Volleyball Home Game Wednesday at 3:45pm vs. Montessorri! We hope you can come out and support our HS Girls VB Team! 
  • Also, our MS girls VB team will be traveling this Wednesday to play against Village School! Go Warriors! 
  • Congratulations to our MS Soccer teams who continue to be undefeated after 4 games this week! Way to go Warriors! They play again this Thursday against Julio Verne!! 
  • Later this week on Wednesday, our HS and MS teams will travel to take on Village! And then again on Thursday our MS will play Julio Verne!! Go Warriors!

Summer Internship Opportunity

Students are invited to apply for a paid virtual internship with TeenToks June 26th - July 28th, 2023.   TeenToks is a mental health app for teens & tweens that features hundreds of teen-made videos on stress management, peer pressure, body image, and more. There are internships available for content creation and marketing internship positions. Interested students can apply online.

Universidad Francisco Vitoria in Madrid is offering limited spaces in their summer program. Information is available here.

The Cooper Union is offering an art summer intensive program for rising seniors. The details can be found here.

For students interested in summer experiences in Europe IE in Spain has a multitude of options that can be found at this link.

The College Counseling office has received information about multiple different types of summer programs available to our students both in the US and in Europe. If your student is interested in finding out more about summer options, please contact kkayayan@cm.edu.gt.

We have secondary students who are interested in finding shadowing and/or internship opportunities this summer.  If you or your workplace are able to facilitate these experiences, please contact Katia Kayayan at kkayayan@cm.edu.gt so we can share this information with interested students.

Day of Q&As with UCAS

For students interested in study in the UK, UCAS is offering a live session that features UCAS experts, careers advisers, unis and employers, and even students and apprentices on 17 May. Featuring everything students need to have meaningful encounters with a range of career paths and opportunities, it is all online in the UCAS Hub.

When applying, make sure to submit all the needed files and have completed the asked requirements. This includes the evidence of the teacher recommendations, the speech (written document), and the requirements for the positions you would like to apply

Thursday the same team will take on Colegio SEK at 3pm!

Huge shout out to our Girls and Boys VB Teams who will be traveling on Tuesday, April 18th, to San Pedro Sula, Honduras for the AASCA Volleyball Tournament! Ms. Day (AD), Julio Dominguez (Girls Coach) & Evelyn Lopez (Boys Coach) will be accompanying them on the trip! We wish them safe travels and the best of luck in all of their games! Go Warriors! 

Upcoming Colegio Maya Cheerleading Festival - Only two weeks away! Join us for an amazing showcase in our own home gym! Saturday, April 29th, from 10-12pm our Cheerleaders will be performing alongside many other schools and academies showcasing their cheerleading talent! This will be the culminating event of the year for our Cheerleading Team! We hope you can join us! All are welcome!

Volleyball Boys will take on Colegio Americano in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, April 11th at 2:45pm! They will also play on Thursday, April 13th in the Finals for 3rd place depending on how they do in the game on the 11th. Both games will be away therefore it will be an Early Release at 2 pm for students participating in those games both days. Go Warriors!

HS Boys and Girls VB Teams will be traveling to AASCA the 18th - 23rd of April. There will be an AASCA Send-Off at the end of the Beauty and the Beast Preview on Wednesday, April 12th. We wish them the best of luck in their travels to San Pedro Sula, Honduras! Go Warriors!

Colegio Maya was proud to host its second MAYAMUN conference this weekend. The conference was entirely organized by students in grades 10-12 who conceived of, planned, and carried out the conference. Students from Colegio Americano, Village School and Colegio Maya participated in crisis committees simulating the cabinets of China and the United States, while other delegates discussed global health issues during a simulation of the World Health Organization.

Our MS boys traveled to Colegio Evelyn Rogers this week to play their first game of the Liga Carretera!

Congratulations to our VB girls who played Colegio San Francisco from El Salvador Friday afternoon for a friendly game! They put up a great fight against a great team!

Tuesday our HS Boys and Girls play Decroly at Home! Girls play at 2:30 pm and Boys at 3:30 pm! This is the last game of the Bi-cultural Season, April 11th and 13th are the semi-finals and finals for the Bi-cultural! Go Warriors!

College Fair
On March 20th there will be a College Fair at the Westin Camino Real in zone 10 from 8 am-12 pm & 3-6 pm. Pre-registration is required. Please see the flyer with information about participating universities.

Congratulations to both our HS Boys and Girls VB Teams who played Village at Home on Thursday. The boys won 2-0. Go Warriors! 

This coming week HS girls play Friday, March 24th at 2:45pm, friendly game against Colegio San Francisco de El Salvador! Thanks to Julio Dominguez, the HS Girls Coach for organizing this game. We hope you can come out and support the Warriors Girls VB Team this Friday! Go Warriors!

Our MS Basketball Teams traveled to Equity Americano this week to play two tough games! I'm proud of our warriors for always demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship irrespective of the uncontrollable circumstances they played in! Way to go WARRIORS!

  • Colegio Maya Track and Field/Cross-Country Invitational! Our Track and Field Athletes will compete in a HOME invitational at Maya starting at 7:30 am and going to 12:30 pm! There are various events and we hope you can come out and support our WARRIORS Track/Cross-Country Team! Go Warriors!

Congratulations to our MS and HS students who participated in the Track and Field Invitational at Suizo Americano last Saturday, March 4th! Nico T. placed 2nd in the 100 meters sprint, way to go Nico! 

Congratulations to our HS Boys Volleyball Team who participated in the Volleyball Tournament at Suizo Americano last Saturday on March 4th and came home with a 1st place Trophy! The 1st place trophy is on display at the front of the school. Way to go Warriors! 

Congrats to both our Boys and Girls MS and HS VB Teams who played two great games against Americano, MS won and tied and HS Boys and Girls lost both games, the last games were close and the boys lost by 2 points.

Next week the HS Volleyball Teams, boys and girls, (NO MS, HS ONLY) will play away on Tuesday, March 14th. Go Warriors!

Thursday, March 16th, our students will have an away MS and HS Basketball Friendly games. Early release will be at 2pm. Bus leaves at 2:10pm.

Spring Subject Masterclasses are taking place in March and April 2023 and are available to book here. Both UK and International students are welcome to attend.  Subject Masterclasses are subject-specific events that offer students in Year 12 the chance to experience typical undergraduate teaching at the University of Cambridge.  They are also offering the Think Cambridge program which is a three-week long series of webinars to inspire Year 11 (S4/NI Y12/International Grade 10) and 12 (S5/Lower Sixth/ International Grade 11) students to apply to Cambridge.

Northwestern University London taster lectures are a great way to experience higher level teaching, to widen knowledge and to get inspiration for personal statements. Students have the chance to chat with staff and students and ask any questions that they may have. Pre-registration is required.

Summer Discovery is offering an in-depth look at how students can explore their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and build the foundation necessary to become a future innovator. Students can also take our design studio or portfolio development courses to prepare for their college applications. All programs offer skill-based learning taught by renowned Parsons faculty.

Regis College is now accepting applications for our popular pre-college Summer Scholars program, a 5-week program ideal for rising juniors and seniors. More information and registration is available here.

INVESTIN is offering summer programmes, students gain up to two weeks of hands-on experience alongside top industry professionals, enabling them to make the right career decisions and maximize their potential. They have offerings in various areas for students in secondary school.

Oxford Royale Academy is offering summer courses on campus at some of the world's leading universities, including Imperial College London, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and Yale University. Young people study specialist subjects with experts, in greater depth than they would at school, and in an interactive, dynamic environment.

Attention delegates! Colegio Maya will be hosting its very own model United Nations this March, anyone interested in participating is encouraged to join us, even those who don't have experience! We will have workshops to learn the necessary skills and this is a great opportunity to practice skills such as debate, public speaking, negotiation, diplomacy, and international relations. If you are interested in joining the class this is a great opportunity to try it out. Whether you want to help plan the event, participate as a delegate, or even as an actor, any and all help will be appreciated! We will be hosting both crisis and General Assembly committees for everyone to participate in. Congratulations to the members of the Varsity and Junior Varsity debate teams who both brought home first place finishes in the AASCA Debate Tournament. This is the second year in a row that the Junior Varsity team has won first place. In addition, Willow C. was named best speaker in the Junior Varsity Division and Diego L. came in second. In the Varsity division, Roslyn H. was second in the best speaker category, while Miranda M. was third. The members of the JV division were: Diego L., Willow C., Eugene S., and Doyun K. The debaters in the Varsity division were: Nicolas T., Roslyn H., Miranda M., Romina G., and Kamalu D.


Our MUN students proudly represented Maya at the AMERIMUNC Model UN event hosted by American University in Washington, DC. Over the course of three days they debated about topics relating to relations in the Indo-Pacific. Our students did an awesome job, with Roslyn H. and Nicolle P. being named Honorable Delegates amongst the over 1,000 participants. Congratulations to the MUN team!

Glion and Les Roches invite students to participate in an “Hospitality Career Trends” information session and workshop. The event will take place on the 31st of January at Hyatt Centric Guatemala City, Guatemala REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.


For students interested in studying in the UK, University of Cambridge is offering an in-depth look at a range of courses. Spring Subject Masterclasses are taking place in March and April 2023 and are available to book here. Both UK and International students are welcome to attend.  Subject Masterclasses are subject-specific events that offer students in Year 12 the chance to experience typical undergraduate teaching at the University of Cambridge.  They are also offering the Think Cambridge program which is a three-week long series of webinars to inspire Year 11 (S4/NI Y12/International Grade 10) and 12 (S5/Lower Sixth/ International Grade 11) students to apply to Cambridge.

PSAT Registration
The PSAT 10, which is administered exclusively to our juniors, will take place on March 7th. Students do not need to register or complete any steps in order to take the exam. The PSAT 9, which will be administered exclusively to our freshmen, will take place on March 21st. Students also do not need to complete any additional steps as registration occurs through the school. 

SAT Registration
The next upcoming SAT exam will be administered on March 11, 2023. The deadline for registration is February 11th. Registration should be completed via the student portal and further instructions and information is available here

College Preparation
Northwestern University London taster lectures are a great way to experience higher level teaching, to widen knowledge and to get inspiration for personal statements. Students have the chance to chat with staff and students and ask any questions that they may have. Pre-registration is required.

Oxford Royale Academy is offering summer courses on campus at some of the world's leading universities, including Imperial College London, the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and Yale University. Young people study specialist subjects with experts, in greater depth than they would at school, and in an interactive, dynamic environment.

Student Athletes and Parents: Friendly Reminder to review, read and sign the following Athletic Code of Conduct and return it to Ms. Day by Friday, Jan. 27th.This is to ensure that all parents and students are aware of and abide by the expectations set therein for participating in athletics as a student-athlete.

Congratulations to our HS boys Soccer Team who played their first home game on Thursday against Village School. They walked away with a 1-1 tie! Next home game is Tuesday, Jan. 24th at Maya vs. Decroly American School at 2:30pm. We hope to see you there!

Upcoming Home Maya vs. Interamericano Boys and Girls HS Volleyball Game will be on Tuesday, Jan. 31st at 2:45pm Boys and 3:45pm Girls! Come on out and support our warriors! This is part of the Bi-cultural Tournament which consists of local AASCA schools in preparation for our AASCA Tournament in Honduras April 19-23rd!

Saturday, March 4th, we will be hosting a Track and Field/Cross-Country invitational at Colegio Maya 8am - 1pm. Mark your calendars! More details on that are coming soon.

Happy New Year and welcome to Semester 2! There has been a lot of energy on the gym and field and excitement for Afterschool Sports to start. I wanted to share with you the following important information:

  • Sports kick off on Monday! Please make sure your child brings an extra snack, water bottle and proper shoes and clothes for training for their sport! We can't wait to get back in action!
  • Sports schedule for you to review/print/keep track of what days your child has sports.
  • Mark your calendars for our upcoming games, with a kick-off at Home this Thursday, Jan. 19th, HS Soccer vs. Village School at 3pm and next Tuesday, Jan. 24th vs. Decroly, MS and HS at 2:30pm and 3:30pm! Our first home VB game will be against Interamericano on Tuesday, Jan. 31st HS Boys at 2:45pm, followed by HS girls at 3:45pm! We hope to see you there supporting our Warriors! More to come on tournaments for Basketball and Track and Field competitions for both MS/HS starting in February.
  • Announcement: We have a new coach for HS Basketball starting next week - we are excited about the expertise this coach brings and are looking forward to introducing him to our students. 
  • Sign-up forms for MS/HS Sports were due Thursday by 4pm. I'm proud to say we have over 80 students in MS and HS participating in sports this semester! If you wish to sign-up your child, you need to not only fill out the form, but also, you MUST send Ms. Day an email letting me know you filled it out late so we can update attendance lists and coordinate transportation.
  • Friendly Reminder! All Transportation changes/requests outside of the norm for your child MUST be submitted using the SchoolAid app by 10am day of or submit the day before. Sports on Friday end at 4pm. Please make sure you are on time at 4:30pm to pick up your child by car or Friday's by 4pm if they are attending Athletics!

MS and HS Athletics: Here is the Semester Sports Schedule for you to reference: 2023 MS/HS Athletics Schedule. Parents please fill out the following Registration Form by Thursday, Jan.12th for Semester 2 Sports. This will help us have accurate attendance & Bus Transportation lists ready for Monday, Jan. 16th when we will resume all Athletic activities.

First game will be on Thursday, Jan. 19th @ Home! Be sure to register and be ready to practice on Tuesday, Jan. 17th.
