Dear Elementary Teachers,

It’s Young Author time!  The Young Author’s Contest will be held ever month starting September and then held each month after.

The Young Author Contest is a writing experience open to students in grades Pre-K to 5th.

Students create their own original story or poems at home.  They can write any kind of story or poem.

Some examples include:  non-fiction, fiction, mystery, poetry collection, play, science fiction, biography, autobiography, alphabet, animal, or a short story collection.

The stories and poems will be read and judged by myself and a volunteer panel of teachers.

They will be judged on:  interest to other children, originality, creativity, neatness and lack of spelling and grammatical errors.

Three first place certificates given out at each month’s Star Assembly.  One will be awarded for each of the following levels.

Pre-K to Kindergarten (Obviously these will be judge on what is age appropriate like drawings or word books)
1st-2nd
3rd-5th

I will have a Young Author’s box in the Elementary Lobby.  The due date will be posted on the box each month.

As mentioned before, the stories and poems need to be completed at home.  This is not meant to be an extra class activity,

but if by chance you find an outstanding in class writing, you are welcome to enter it for students.

Attached is a list of contest rules.  I would appreciate a moment of your class time to explain the contest to the students.

Please encourage your students to be part of this wonderful writing opportunity.

Thanks for your help.
