*      Recommended Summer Reading for First Grade

We hope that students entering first grade bring with them a love of books! Whether your child is just beginning to read, reading on their own, or are not at that point yet, the most important thing is that they enjoy books and view reading in a positive light.  You can help by making sure that reading is a priority in your home.  Please read to or with your child daily and let them see you reading as well.  Reading books in English is wonderful exposure, but remember that it is also very important to read books in your native language as well.  Choose books of interest to your child.  Help them see how important reading is in everyone’s daily lives, whether it is reading a recipe, the morning paper, or special stories at bedtime.  Choose any book—you can’t go wrong.  If you need a few ideas to get you started, here some titles we suggest:

*      Recommended Summer Reading for Fifth Grade

This is only a suggested reading list.  My only suggestion is for students to “just read”.  Read whatever you want, whenever you want or wherever you want.  See you in August.

If you are interested in a more extensive book search just run it through a search engine (Google) for other suggested book lists.

Suggested Reading List

This reading list is provided by the American Library Association for you and your young reader. If you choose to use this list, draw your child's attention to the books on the list, starting with those for the appropriate grade level. Go to the library and find one or more of the books listed here. Let your child look at the front and back covers of the book(s) and thumb through the book(s). Ask whether the book(s) interest your child. Have your child read one page – if there are no difficult words for your child then it is too easy, if there are 4 or more difficult words then it is too hard, if it is somewhere in between then it a good level for you child.
