It’s only one book every week.  But re-reading them throughout the week will help your child master the vocabulary and maybe ‘read’ some from memory.  You can ask them to match letters, find page numbers, name letters and even simple words.  Compare illustrations.  Discuss titles.  The possibilities are endless…

And mostly don’t forget to enjoy this special time together!

We hope that students entering first grade bring with them a love of books! Whether your child is just beginning to read, reading on their own, or are not at that point yet, the most important thing is that they enjoy books and view reading in a positive light.  You can help by making sure that reading is a priority in your home.  Please read to or with your child daily and let them see you reading as well.  Reading books in English is wonderful exposure, but remember that it is also very important to read books in your native language as well.  Choose books of interest to your child.  Help them see how important reading is in everyone’s daily lives, whether it is reading a recipe, the morning paper, or special stories at bedtime.  Choose any book—you can’t go wrong.  If you need a few ideas to get you started, here some titles we suggest:
