Some Tidbits of Maya History

      • Colegio Maya started in 1958 in a house in zone 9 with 12 students.

      • It was started by a group of parents, some in connection with the US government and some in private businesses, who wanted to provide an education equivalent to that offered in public schools in the United States.

      • There were 2 teachers: Mrs. Foster had one pupil in 2nd grade, 2 in 3rd grade and 2 in 5th grade and Mrs. Rorem had 6 6th graders and 1 7th grader.

      • In 1959, the school moved to a house in zone 10 with all grades represented and a limit of 10 pupils per grade.

      • On April 30, 1960, the school moved to 7th Ave., Zone 9 and grew to 180 students.

      • In 1964, it moved to 4th Calle, Zona 13.

      • Maya was first accredited by SACS, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, in 1972.

      • The first graduating class was in June of 1978.

      • In 1980, the school moved to its present campus.

      • At different times in the 70's and 80's, German, French, Russian and Spanish were all taught at Maya.

      • It was possible for Guatemalans to first enroll in Colegio Maya at the end of 1982, given Maya's relationship with the Guatemalan Ministry of Education.

      • At that time, "Colegio Maya was an international school, where children from 24 different nationalities grow up together, study and work together in a family atmosphere. It is a link in the chain leading to international understanding, and thus to PEACE IN THE WORLD, our goal for the future."

      • Today, October 1st, 2003, we are an international school with 370 students from 36 different countries. We still believe very much in understanding and peace and work together to help us all realize our potential to bring more to the world.
