| Colegio
Maya: the American International School of Guatemala is
a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian, coeducational day school,
which offers a pre-kindergarten through grade 12 education
program for students of all nationalities. It is on the U.S.
school calendar; school starts the second week in August and
ends the first week in June. Colegio Maya is fully accredited
by SACS,
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, as well
as recognized by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education. It
is a member of AAIE,
the American Association of International Education; AASCA,
the American Association of Schools in Central America; and
the Tri-Regional
Association. |

Historical
Highlights
1958 |
A
group of U.S. government employees and international
businessmen and women founded the school with the idea
of creating an institution from which their children
would be able to transfer easily to school in the U.S.
or to similar schools in other countries. The first
year - in a house in a residential area of the city
- there were 18 students and 2 teachers. |
1972 |
Accreditation
was granted by SACS
- the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools -
for the first time. |
1978 |
The
first senior class graduated. |
1980 |
The
school moved to its present location on the outskirts
of Guatemala City. |
1998 |
Work
on the gymnasium was completed. |
2002 |
The
elementary and secondary libraries were renovated and

school is governed by 9-member parent board of directors
elected for 2-year terms by members of the Colegio Maya

Faculty
| There
were 55 full-time members in the 2004-2005 school year,
including 39 U.S. citizens, 4 citizens of other countries,
and 12 Guatemalans. All teachers have a minimum of a
Bachelor's degree or the equivalent, over half have
Master's degrees, and one has a Doctorate. |

Enrollment
| Enrollment
for the 2007-2008 school year was 339 (PreK-5: 174,
6-8: 68, 9-12:97). Of the total, 87 are U.S. citizens,
60 are Guatemalans, and 192 are children of other nationalities. |

Facilities
| The
campus is located on the outskirts of Guatemala City.
The facility include several buildings which serve the
early childhood, elementary, middle and high school
students.There is also a gymnasium complex that includes
a large multipurpose room, four middle school classrooms
and a cafeteria and a performing and fine arts center
with a theatre that houses the art, music and drma programs.
Within the school facilities there are science laboratories,
a new technology resource center, an elementary computer
laboratory, a soccer/football field, and basketball/tennis
courts. The completely renovated and enlarged elementary
and secondary library complex houses over 22,000 volumes
and students and faculty have access to more than 400
periodicals on line. |

Special
Programs/Services
| In
addition to our highly-qualified teaching staff, the
faculty includes the following personnel: a guidance
counselor, a nurse, a learning resource specialist,
a technology resource specialist, a curriculum coordinator,
and a college counselor. Elective and enrichment activities
and programs at Maya include: art, choir, instrumental
music, drama, Destination Imagination, Model United
Nations, Knowledge Bowl, adventure education, team sports,
and journalism. Both elementary and secondary buildings
have a technology resource center and every classroom
is equipped with a computer connected to the Internet. |

Finances
For the 2007-08 school
year, the annual membership fee for PreK is $6,247,
for K-5, $9288, for 6-8, $9710 and for 9-12, $9,836.
There is also a one time only $6,500 Incorporation Fee
per student and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other
Languages) and LRC (Learning Resource Center) fees of
$400 per semester. The only other addition fee is the
Senior Fee of $200 per senior. Bus service is also available
for all grades and the fee for that is in local currency,
Quetzales, and the annual fee is Q9,208 (approximately
$1,150).
