"Expose, Teach, and Reinforce" Explained

E is for expose
Expectations marked with an E indicate an area or concept that should be lightly or informally introduced to students. Ideally, these expectations can be addressed in the context of working on other expectations. For example, in fourth grade students can be exposed to the inverse relationship between multiplication and division as they are studying strategies for whole-number multiplication and division. All students do not necessarily need to master expectations marked with an E, since they will usually be revisited in later grades and classes.

T is for teach
These are the expectations that should be the focus of instruction. Lessons and units should be designed by the teacher to provide opportunities for in-depth, quality learning in these areas.

R is for reinforce

Further Steps

  1. Because of the changes proposed in the elementary area, elementary teachers will need to be provided with in-service time to discuss and work on the implementation of these changes. This in-service time should give teachers practical advice and ideas on how to incorporate ideas from this curriculum and improve the learning of mathematics in their classrooms.

  2. Teachers at all levels need materials and resources to support them as they try to implement the curriculum. Colegio Maya needs to investigate and purchase textbooks, technology, manipulatives, and other professional resources to assist teachers in this area.

  3. At some point, assessment of student learning will need to be addressed. Once the curriculum is in place, it will become necessary to assess how and whether students are learning the mathematics outlined in the curriculum. Colegio Maya will need to decide how this will be done
