This site is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with dozens of colleges and universities without having to search for their individual Web sites. The so-called virtual tours vary widely, however. In some, the tours amount to nothing more than a campus map and some photos of prominent buildings. In others, the online tours are very impressive, indeed. Using the latest multimedia tools, induding 360-degree imagery, Web cams, and audio clips, a number of colleges make virtual visits seem a lot like the real thing. Scores of colleges are represented here. Find the school (or schools) of your choice, select the feature that most appeals to you (virtual tour, Web cam, interactive map, video, photos, or Web site), and click away.

It has a number of links to online rankings and evaluations, such as the annual one from U.S. News and World Report; and links to alternatives to rankings; arguments against ranking; and rankings using unusual criteria, such as student activism or computer connectedness. In addition to rankings of undergraduate colleges and universities, you will find rankings of graduate study programs.The bibliography of print resources is also helpful.

From the folks who bring us the scholastic aptitude tests (SATs) comes this treasure trove of helpful information for college-bound students and their families. The site has tips for those who are preparing for SAT testing, including the SAT Question of the Day. A schedule of College Board testing dates is available, as is an electronic form that can be used to register for the SATS using Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. For those preparing for the SAT II writing test, the College Board offers an online essay evaluation service for a nominal fee. You'll find most of the requisite advice and tools for a college search at this site, but we were impressed by a couple of valuable features that we have not found at most other sites. High school students who have their hearts set on college should carefully review the points outlined in Preparing for College. But younger students who have the foresight to check out this site will learn that you can start getting ready for college as early as the sixth grade. Suggested steps for students in grades 6 to 12 can be found here. Other sections of the College Choice Website address such critical steps as Selecting a School, The College Application, Paying for College, and Your First Year Away.
