What does a Counselor
do?
Schools counselors' jobs are as varied as the students they
serve.
Counselors help students to
· Adjust to a new school.
· Find answers to their concerns.
· Make school a more rewarding and successful
experience.
· Develop new skills in decision making, problem
solving, conflict resolution and interpersonal communication.
· Develop good study habits and keep their best
academic performance.
At the counseling office, students
· Talk about things that are important to students
· Work in small groups.
· Play games that help them to learn about themselves
and other people.
· Work on a specific project or develop a plan of
action.
Students may request counseling themselves or may be referred by parents
or teachers.
Counselors work with
parents to
· Coordinate the efforts of home and school.
· Discuss specific issues related to their children.
For example, attitude towards school, academic growth, personal and emotional
development, relationships with other students, and reactions to changes and
transitions.
· Provide a link between families and community
services when necessary.
· Help find early solutions to students' problems.
· Analyze standardized test results.
