Community Service - Connections
After Hurricane Stan, several Maya students and teachers went to the village of Pastores, Sacatepequez, to help dig out the mud and water-filled buildings by the river. The boys school, situated right next to the bridge, suffered severe water damage, losing all the furniture, most of the electrical equipment and all their classroom materials. After talking to the director of the school, Dr. Miller found that the most urgent need was a manual type writer so that all the Ministry of Education paper work could be completed, and one was almost immediately donated by Patty, our receptionist. The next step was to accumulate basic materials, note books, staplers, pencils, crayons, markers, tape, poster paper etcetera, and 2 large radio/cassette players. A large box was set up in the front lobby of Maya, and people began dropping off their contributions. By Christmas, the box was full, a boom box had been donated, and another one bought by funds contributed by a friend of Dr. Millers. On Saturday 14th January,2006, the collected Items were delivered to the school in Pastores and handed over to the Director , who was in the final process of readying his school for the new school year. He was extremely grateful and sends his thanks to all of the Colegio Maya community who showed, once again, its spirit of generosity and caring. |
