What to Read

The King of the Screw-Ups by K.L. Going.  Sometimes being popular is not all it is made out to be.  Though Liam Geller has it all – the looks, the girls, the clothes (his Mom is a super model) he seems to mess up constantly when it comes to getting through life.  Best quote:  “You can’t create love – you just have to take it wherever you find it.”

Websites that promote
Literature

Carol Hurst’s Children’s Literature Site features a complete collection of reviews of great books for kids.  One particular feature of this database is that users can perform searches by grade level.

Great Websites for Kids is compiled by The Association for Library Service for Children and the American Library Association.  Here you will find links to many of your favorite story characters and authors.

The School Library Journal conducted a poll to decide on the 100 Top Picture Books.  Now they should do another one of the top 100 that did not make it…

Don’t have time to read a bedtime story tonight?  Click on the Storyline Online link and enjoy hearing and watching celebrities such as Elijah Wood and Al Gore read aloud instead.

Readergirlz is an online community for teen girls that promotes literacy.  In their manifesta they state that primarily this site is about having serious fun while talking about books.  Every month a new author is featured however, check out their archives for past book recommendations.

Guyslitwire is a blog that exists to bring literary news and reviews to teenage boys and those who care about them.  For recommended books check out the section called CATEGORIES  in the left pane.

Teri Lesesne is the self-proclaimed Goddess of Young Adult Literature.  Her website offers fabulous suggestions for what to read, especially for older teens.  I particularly recommend the TLA  2009 list as I was fortunate enough to attend this conference and can offer more insight into her selections.

The book is called Ordinary Ghosts and our new 5th grade teacher, Mr. Shawn Walbecq, said it is ‘GREAT’.  Lots of references to the ‘rock band’ lifestyle and some strong language means its probably better suited for high school readers, so if you are looking for a book that has a “fierce and accurate understanding of the young male psyche” and also “tells a good story that is completely believable” then this coming-of-age book is for you.

So I don’t know if when you become a famous librarian people will want to interview you but…  Just in case, I will be prepared when they ask me:  If there was a fire in the library and you could only save one book, what would it be?  My answer is:  The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy by E. D Hirsch.  Seriously, for all you trivia buffs, this book is great.  It covers every subject from Anthropology to Technology -in essence,  as the cover states, it has everything you need to know.

Just when you thought the Pigeon had given up, he is back and this time he wants a puppy.  Yes, we all know that pigeons should not have pets, but try telling that to this pigeon.  Mo Willems’ hilarious book will entertain parents and children alike as the pigeon tries every trick in the book to get his way.
