The
Colegio Maya Libraries exist to serve the unique needs
of the Maya learning community. The
Secondary and Elementary Libraries are the “heart of the
school” and as such
seek to be vibrant, welcoming places for students, faculty, and parents
alike. Our goal is
to develop life-long
learners who use information effectively and are able to evaluate the
quality
and worth of the information they encounter on a daily basis, both in
school
and out.
The
Secondary Library has well-developed collections,
including a large fiction collection and non-fiction collections that
support
the school curriculum as well as student interests.
Our biography collection has been
carefully
developed and is of particular note.
We
also have a small, but very interesting, collection of books in Korean
that
have been donated by students’ families.
The Secondary Library receives about
thirty different magazines monthly,
in both English and Spanish, and also receives the Prensa
Libre
daily and the Sunday Edition of the New York Times.
The
Elementary Library has wonderful collections of books
for elementary students of all reading abilities, from picture books to
advanced
chapter books. Priority
has been given
in the past year to developing our Spanish language collections, which
now
offer a wide variety of reading materials for both native and
second-language
Spanish speakers. The Elementary Library also
has an extensive
collection of audio books and receives several magazines, of interest
to
elementary students, monthly.
Students
are welcome to use the Library facilities before
school, during transitions, lunch, and recess, and after school. The Secondary Library
computer lab is also available
to students during these times, and both libraries are equipped with
wireless
Internet access. Parents
are encouraged
to check out Library materials for their own interests and to model
reading for
their children.
The
Library facilities, as they exist today, were the dream
of Dr. Miller, our
Director. In 2002 our building was re-designed and expanded,
more than
doubling the area of the Secondary Library, adding a computer lab and
creating
a separate space for the Elementary Library. Indeed, our
Library program
would not be what it is today without the committed support of our
administration.
We
hope that the Libraries at Colegio Maya will add meaning
and value to your experience as a member of the community. Your comments and
suggestions are very
welcome. Please
send them to Kate Dunigan AtLee, kdunigan-atlee@cm.edu.gt.
