In my eighth year as the Director of Colegio Maya, I continue
to learn every day and to be stimulated and amazed by the
work of our students and staff. We are blessed to have over
80 new students this year and 13 new staff members as well
as 4 new members on our Board of Directors. Midst all this
"newness" there is also a depth of wisdom and experience
from students and staff and parents who are not new to Maya
and affirm their talents, hopes and dreams and commitment
to excellence in ways that help our new ones know they have
joined an amazing learning community where it is not hard
to "catch the spirit"!
One of my favorite leadership frames is one called "Appreciative
Inquiry" and this approach to community building and
learning advocates that we look for the best of the best-the
best stories we have to tell, the best moments when we feel
we are really on fire--really feeling the power of learning
and discovery and knowing, and that we continue to find things
we truly appreciate about one another. I believe that appreciative
inquiry led us to defining our vision last spring in ways
that assure we will not perish, but can thrive as we continue
to find ways to live our vision and our lives. That vision
talks about active learning, excellence, valuing diversity,
each of us finding our own voice and ultimately working to
make this a more peaceful world.
This is a vision I am proud to be helping actualize, one child
at a time. This is a school I am excited and honored to be
a part of and as we continue to learn by design, map our curriculum,
enjoy our new Performing and Fine Arts Center and its 3 classrooms
for drama, music and art and find our voices, individually
and collectively, on all the playing fields and classrooms
and community service ventures, I invite anyone to come join
us and help not only catch, but enjoy and spread the spirit.
Isn't that what peace is about at best?

Colegio Maya is a very vibrant, dynamic educational
institution and a wonderful community of learners. Our secondary
school continues to provide a great educational atmosphere
where students can use their multiple intelligences and talents
to learn and become global citizens of the world.
At the high school level we offer a rigorous and challenging
academic program including the following eight Advance Placement
(AP) courses: AP World History; AP US History; AP Psychology:
AP English Language; AP English Literature; AP Spanish Literature;
AP Spanish Language and AP Calculus. We also offer an inviting
variety of elective courses for students to choose from, which
serve to enhance their already challenging academic load.
Our exploratory program at the middle school level allows
students to "explore" different courses throughout
6th, 7th and 8th grade, such as photography, Model United
Nations, Read On! art, drama, music, writing, adventure and
computing. Our advisory/reading program at this level provides
students with the opportunity to engage in activities related
to the ten values Maya has established as a school as well
as an opportunity for student to read books, magazines or
articles according to the individual student's choice.
I look forward to another great academic year at Maya where
we can all continue to enjoy learning in the wonderful academic
atmosphere Colegio Maya provides.

Welcome to Colegio Maya Elementary where students
come to school each day with a smile and ready to flourish
under the nurturing environment our classroom teachers provide.
The elementary embraces and encourages the diversity among
our students by delivering lessons that are challenging and
that meet the needs of each individual child in order to lay
the foundation for children to become life long learners.
We support Howard Gardener's Multiple Intelligence Theory
to provide the best in differentiated instruction as well
as other best practices such as: Talents Unlimited, ESOL in
the Mainstream, and AIMS (Activities Integrating Math &
Science) that provide hands on, inquiry science learning.
We have a vigorous mathematics program called Math Trailblazers
that was developed by the University of Chicago. It's a conceptual
math program that encourages students to not only learn their
facts but to think about the many ways a problem can be solved
as well as understanding what numbers are all about in a fun
and stimulating way. Colegio Maya also offers an After School
Activities program each semester where students in grades
first through fifth can register for such activities as: karate,
soccer, arts & crafts, basketball, flag football, photography,
and more depending on sponsors and interest. As you can see
we are a very dynamic elementary providing a wonderfully caring,
trusting environment where students feel safe to take risks
and grow academically. So, if you are looking for fun, challenging,
nurturing school for your child to experience diversity and
make new friends who come from all over the world, look no
further. Colegio Maya is for you. Check out my website for
more information.
