School Improvement Plan - Overview
The School Improvement Committee was established three years
ago as an out-growth of the Long Range Planning Committee in an attempt to
further delve into the school improvement process and welcome community input.
A multitude of discussions and conversations were held a variety of levels
to identify and delineate school improvement initiatives specific to the Colegio
Maya learning community. While that traditionally, formal surveys tend to
be the organizational tools to serve this process, for Colegio Maya, given
its dynamic leadership model and supportive community, shared conversations
seemed to fit more coherently into Colegio Maya’s school improvement process.
A highlight of the whole process was the School Improvement Retreat that was
held where equal numbers of parents (included Board members), students and
faculty met to discuss school improvement. The retreat provided information
that served as a base for the development of the school improvement plan.
Sub-committees were formed for the areas of Active Learning, Curriculum Connections,
Progressive Evaluation/Assessment, Improved Reading Instruction and Social
Issues and Values. Efforts of the sub-committees led to the development of
a comprehensive 5 year action plan, approved by the school board,
that addresses goals set by the School Improvement Committee. To date,
the School Improvement Committee has met to identify and monitor progress
on the action plan (see UPDATES).
