School Characteristics - Overview
Colegio Maya is a parent-owned non-profit cooperative governed by a nine member Board of Directors whose members are elected for two year terms. It is registered with the Guatemalan Ministry of Education and has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) since 1978.
The school primarily serves families who are from countries
other than
Colegio Maya celebrates its diversity in a wide variety of
ways from a firm commitment to defining intelligence based in Howard Gardner’s
“Multiple Intelligences” theory, to a program that offers many opportunities
for its students to grow. Of specific note is a rich Advanced Placement Program
for high school students that allow them to be prepared for and accepted by the
finest universities in the world, particularly the
“Catch the Spirit!” is the slogan for Colegio Maya which if not viewed on the sign upon entering the school, then will surely be evident as one walks amongst the students, staff, faculty and/or parents while on campus. This spirit is one embodied by the school director and extended to all by model and invitation to participate fully as Colegio Maya evolves as a community of learners. During the past several years the school has developed in many ways. Structurally, the school has built a new maintenance facility, refurbished and enlarged the library, and is currently constructing a performing and fine arts center. In programs and instruction Colegio Maya has dedicated efforts to continue improvement in early childhood, middle school, reading instruction, community service, curriculum development, college counseling, faculty professional development, AP program, ESOL, and much more.
