Samples of Student Work: Senior Portfolio

This project was begun in 2003-2004 with the then senior class being asked to write a culminating reflection on what they have learned while attending Colegio Maya. The students were asked to use the school’s Graduate Profile as a point of reference.

In the following year, 2004-2005, all seniors are being required to complete an enlarged Portfolio by April. Each senior will formally present their portfolio to an audience of peers, parents and staff. The purpose of this project is to provide the senior with the opportunity to demonstrate to her/himself and their community the knowledge gained and the maturity achieved while attending Colegio Maya.  This project gives seniors a chance to show that their high school experience has been meaningful and practical. Depending on the feedback from this year’s exercise, the portfolio will be extended to the lower high school grades.

As the year progresses, the student should collect materials from all classes and activities that they have been involved in while in high school. These include the following three sections:

(1) Student as a Planner – standardized test scores, student activity summary (activities, athletics, awards, positions of leadership), high school transcripts and career interest survey (for 2005-2006), university applications, letters of recommendation, curriculum vitae and a narrative of future goals.

(2) Student as a Learner – Includes a sample(s) of evidence of ability on the following areas of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and an Elective. These could be essays, assessments, projects, pictures of projects, etc. using Multiple Intelligences. Also included in this section is Reflection Essay based on the Graduate Profile and a Senior Project Presentation using Technology.

(3) Student as a Global Citizen – A record of Community Service which lists the hours that have been  worked in Community Service Projects and includes an explanation of the project(s).  Additionally the student is expected to explain how their community service has created personal awareness of society and how it has helped them become more aware of the problems society in Guatemala faces. Seniors must complete a Global Citizen Reflective Essay which is based on how the student sees her/himself as a citizen of the world.
