Standardized, Norm-referenced Measures:
In reading we are beginning to use some standardized norm-referenced measures. Implemented this year in our Early Childhood (PK-K) and Early Elementary program (1 & 2), we are using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). This test measures reading readiness at the earliest ages and progress in reading as children begin to read. This assessment (DIBELS) has helped us to identify students at risk and to provide individualized instruction. In addition to this as a result of our School Improvement Plan, we have also implemented the STAR Reading Assessment in grades 2-5 to measure basic reading comprehension skills. This test provides an alert to when there are reading difficulties so that we might continue with further needed assessments. This assessment also helps us to match leveled reading books to student ability on an individual basis. Furthermore, we use Rigby Running Records (more a performance-based measure) in grades 1-3. This is an informal reading inventory that allows insight into students’ reading comprehension and decoding abilities. Finally, we participate in the TERRA NOVA standardized series (3-7) that has a subtest for reading skills.
